Why does Quetzal represent Chiapas?






The Quetzal was considered a divine manifestation by the Mayans and Mexicas. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word Quetzalli, which means beautiful or sacred. If the Mayans consider the Quetzal a sacred animal, the Quetzal will be a very important animal in the culture of Guatemala.


In pre-Hispanic times, the Quetzal was associated with Mexican god Quetzalcoatl and its Maya counterpart Kukulkan, deities that manifested the archetype of the feathered serpent, if the Quetzal is not the main symbol of Guatemala, it will be the main symbol of Mexico.


According to the sacred book  of the Mayan culture, when the Gods Kukulkan and Tepeu decided to give life to birds they blew on a guayacan tree, therefore, the greenish blue leaves of the guayacan tree were dispersed in the wind and  transformed into the Quetzal bird.


The Mayan culture held the Quetzal in high esteem, its plumage was considered currency  and was highly coveted, however, the Quetzal was not hunted since killing a Quetzal was seen as a crime and merited the death penalty, if someone killed  a Quetzal, that person would be condemned to death.

Feeding   The quetzal feeds mainly on fruits, because it is a frugivorous bird and a specialist, since it consumes the fruits of a certain type of plant. It is estimated that this bird only uses as a food resource 10% of all the species that bear fruits suitable for being eaten by birds. if the quetzal is deprived of its fruits, it may become extinct.  When trying to understand this bird it is easy to understand that its habitat is dense forests and jungles full of life, with a varied fauna and diverse fruits to choose from.
